ACTION/SOCIAL HEALTH

HISTORY
|
Action was formed in 1996 by the Department Directors of Juvenile Court Services, Department of Human Services, Woodbury County Sheriff's Office, Sioux City Police Department, 3rd Judicial District Adult Corrections, Sioux City Community Schools, and Siouxland District Health. The purpose of ACTION was to coordinate services to children and families in Woodbury County neighborhoods. The definition of Action is "Area Coordination Teams In Our Neighborhoods".
The Action Board appointed a representative from each agency to serve as the Action Supervisory Team. This team was responsible for implementing ACTION Teams in Woodbury County.
Action Teams were subsequently formed around the area occupied by the middle school districts of West Middle, Woodrow Wilson, East Middle, Hoover and Sgt. Bluff Luton.
The Action Supervisory Team expanded the concept of ACTION and developed Social Health Teams. Social Health Teams were teams that were focused more on the individual school students rather than general neighborhood issues. There were 35 Social Health Teams formed within Woodbury County.
The ACTION Board evolved into the Decat Board and then the SHIP Board. ACTION/SOCIAL Health is a subcommittee of the SHIP Board.

Woodbury County has been designatied as a "Community Partnership's for Protecting Children site" (CPPC). CPPC is not a program but rather a philosophy of how a community can take steps to protect their children. CPPC contains the following four strategies: One: An individualized course of action is implemented for all children and families who are identified by the community members as being at substantial risk of child abuse and neglect.
Two: Each partnership organizes a network of neighborhood and community supports.
Three: The child protection service (CPS) agency begins to adopt new policies, practice, roles and responsibilities.
Four: Each partnership establishes a local decision-making body that reviews the effectiveness of community child protection and engages community members to participate in and support the initiative.
The Action Supervisory Team has been designated as the "Local Decision-Making Body" for Woodbury County. This group is open to everyone for participation. Please contact John Calhoun if interested in participating on the Action Supervisory Team: calhounj@nwaea.com
